OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE DECEMBER 14th AT THE SOUTH MONTGOMERY REGIONAL LIBRARY, 2101 LAKE ROBBINS DRIVE, THE WOODLANDS.

DECEMBER HOLIDAY PARTY AND SLIDE SHOW

December is our annual membership celebration. We will not have a speaker this year. Instead we will show our favorite photos from the past two years to show how much we have made progress in our photography. Please submit up to five of your favorite photos to Ellen (See submission Instructions below). We want everyone to participate so start reviewing your photos now for submission.

There may also be a brief discussion on volunteers for the 2016 board.

Please bring your favorite finger foods, appetizer's, or snack, items to accompany the sandwiches and drinks provided by the club.

Our monthly meeting for the month of December will be held at the South Montgomery Regional Library 2101 Lake Robbins Drive,

6:45 - 7:00pm - Social time, grab a snack, vote for Mini Contest,

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

The Montgomery County Animal Shelter is in need of photographers to volunteer their time on Sundays to photograph rescue dogs. Volunteers at the shelter try to take better pictures of the animals than their original intake picture so it can be posted on the shelters Facebook page to hopefully to help get them adopted. The shelter has over 64k followers who see these pictures and have come to love seeing the animals dressed up.
If there are any photographers in the club who are interested in volunteering their time on Sunday’s from 1-4pm (it doesn’t even have to be that long, even an hour would help, and it doesn’t to be every single Sunday) to help take pictures at the shelter.
There are three people who currently take pictures at the shelter and they can’t always be there so they are looking for more volunteers to help out.

Volunteering is a great way to help the animals get adopted while also getting your images out there in the community and gaining experience in animal photography.

The Science of Photography –
Exposure Triangle

To the digital camera newcomer (and some oldcomers), controlling the light for a “good” exposure/image/picture can be confusing. If you are such a photographer, you are in luck --- there are only three parameters to worry about.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) --- The IOS sets international standards for many things. When used in photography, the IOS has set standards for the sensitivity of camera sensors. ISO 100 is the same for all camera vendors and sensor sizes. The bigger the ISO, the higher the sensitivity.

APERTURE --- The lens aperture controls the amount of light allowed to reach the sensor. The bigger the aperture, the more light allowed through. Aperture size is measured in “f/stops” (the ratio of the lens focal length to the aperture diameter). Counter-intuitively, the higher the number, the smaller the aperture (opening) and the less light allowed through. Adjusting the aperture from f/2 to f/4 reduces the amount of light.

SHUTTER SPEED --- The shutter controls how long the camera sensor is exposed to light. The faster the shutter speed (measured in increments of seconds), the less light allowed. Changing the shutter speed from 1/500 to 1/1000 second reduces the light by half.

Your challenge, as a photographer, starting at a “perfect exposure” (a certain combination of ISO, aperture and shutter speed), is figuring out what to do to maintain an equivalent exposure if you change one element of the triangle. You can visualize the above triangle in your mind to decide what to change. Here are some examples:

1. You decide that your ISO is too high and might introduce too much “noise”/”grain” into your picture. If you make your camera less sensitive by reducing the ISO (e.g., change from ISO 400 to 200), the resulting image will be too dark. You will have to slow down the shutter speed and/or make the aperture bigger, increasing the amount of light.
2. You decide to decrease the depth of field in your picture and make the aperture bigger (e.g., change from f/4 to f/2), making the resulting image too bright. You will have to make the shutter speed faster and/or decrease the ISO, decreasing the amount of light needed or available.
3. You are taking sports pictures and know you have to use a higher shutter speed to “freeze” the action. Making the shutter speed faster (e.g., change from 1/500 to 1/1000 second) makes the image too dark. You will have to increase the ISO and/or make the aperture larger.

Yes, you can set your camera to “auto” or “programmed” or even some of the “scene” modes and let the camera do the work. However, if you want to take positive control of your images (graininess, depth of field, stop action, etc), you would be well-served to learn and use the “exposure triangle”. Have fun shooting!

You can submit up to two photos. The winner is selected via secret ballot by the majority vote from the members in attendance at the meeting.

You can submit up to five photos. Please place your name at the bottom of your photo so that other members will know took the photo..

How to submit:

Size/Type of file: 1024 long side, 72dpi, jpeg format at 8 bit

How to name your file: Your name (first or last), whether it’s for the mini or slide show, and then number.
