Kathy Adams Clark

Behind the scenes on a book project


Have you ever wondered what goes into getting your photos published in a book? Are you dreaming of a photo book but don't know where to start? Join Kathy Adams Clark as she walks you through one of her book projects from beginning to end. Learn how photos are used for different purposes in a book project, how to conceptualize a photo book, the roles people play at a publisher, how to make contact with a publisher and the work that goes into a book project. Kathy's latest book Photographing Big Bend National Park was released by Texas A&M Press in early 2013.The book is a companion book to Enjoying Big Bend National Park written by husband Gary Clark. The photos in that book were taken by Kathy. She has also taken the photos for Portrait of Houston and Backroads of the Texas Hill Country.

Kathy Adams Clark is the owner of KAC Productions. She started the company in 1995 after a career in Human Resources. Her photos have appeared in many places including Birder's World, Ranger Rick, The New York Times and National Geographic Books. Kathy also leads photo tours for Strabo Tours. She speaks frequently at association meetings and nature festivals. In addition, she is past president of the North American Nature Photography Association

2013 & 2014 Board Member Positions

The following positions are either currently open or will be open effective January 1st. Duties of the board consist of attending monthly club meetings and board meetings (the last Wednesday of each month) as well as the specific duties outlined below.

This is your club and it takes more than a few people to make it run smoothly; please consider volunteering a few hours each month.

Treasurer: (Beginning January 1) Responsible for all financial record keeping, forecasting, paying bills, and signing all checks. The treasurer attends the monthly meetings, pays for the room (when required) and enrolls new members. This position is also responsible for monitoring the P.O. Box and maintaining the member roster which is shared with the board.

Secretary: Will keep up with board meeting notes. Make reservations for club meetings, workshops, fall contest and any other meeting that is scheduled for the club. This position is also responsible for maintaining and providing the name badges at the club meetings.

Public Relations (Beginning January 1) Responsible for incoming inquiries from the public and members.

Workshop Coordinator Responsible for researching, planning & coordinating club workshops.

Slide Show Coordinator: Will manage the monthly member slide show and mini-contests. Board member must have personal laptop.

Field Trips

Houston Downtown Photo Walk

Date: September 15th
Time: 5:00pm
Place: Hard Rock Café 502 Texas Avenue, Houston, Texas, 77002

We are to meet in front of the Hard Rock Café and walk the area photographing architecture and other areas downtown. This a good opportunity to shoot pictures for the category urban landscapes for the fall photo contest. Reminder: The Urban landscape photos must be submitted as black and white photos.

Submit your images (up to 2) to Blake by Friday, September 6th to participate in our monthly mini-contest! Please size images to 1024 pixels on the longest side!

Remember there is a $20 cash prize for the winner of the mini contest! So get those pictures sent in!

FALL CONTEST CATEGORIES

The categories for the fall photo contest are as follows:

  1. Black & White: Urban Landscape

  2. People: Up close

  3. Nature: Spring

  4. Technique: Panning

  5. Wildcard: Photos from 2013 workshops and field trips

  6. New Members: The color Blue

  7. Open

All members may submit two photos per category with the exception of the New Member category which is only open to members who joined during 2012 and 2013. All pictures must be mounted, matted and framed (maximum frame outside total dimension 18x22 inches), in each category. There will also be a "Best of Show" and "Members Choice" award. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact a board member.
Minor adjustments such as contrast/brightness, removing dust and scratches, burning/dodging, and cropping are allowed. all other images alterations must be entered in the "Open category" or any category where a special technique is required.

Members Slide Show

Have you been someplace interesting or just gotten some great shots? Each month a portion of the meeting will be devoted to seeing and talking about the creative experiences of our membership. Please share your shots with members by participating in members slide show. Submit your photos (limit 4) to Blake by the Friday prior to the monthly meetings.
