Andy Biggs

African Safari Photographer

Andy Biggs is an avid adventurer, conservationist, teacher, and outdoor photographer whose photography celebrates the African landscape and its rich wildlife, people, and culture, With a deep respect and understanding for African wildlife, Andy unfolds the world of the Serengeti, the Okavango Delta and other wildlife-rich destinations onto our doorstep with striking emotional depth. His photographic safaris allow the traveler to not only enhance their understanding of photography, lighting, and wildlife, but to develop a life-long admiration for Africa's beauty and culture. In 2008, Banana Republic used thirteen of Andy's photographs as the cornerstone of their Urban Safari campaign, and his images were seen in all 750 stores around the globe, as well as billboards, catalogs and annual reports. Andy was also the winner of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the year in the 'Wild Places' category in 2008.

2013 Board Member Positions

The following positions are still open. Duties of the board consist of attending monthly club meetings and board meetings (the last Wednesday of each month) as well as the specific duties outlined below.

This is your club and it takes more than a few people to make it run smoothly; please consider volunteering a few hours each month.

The President will preside over meetings and is responsible for generally keeping the momentum going in a positive direction. This position takes the lead with regards to seeking out and scheduling speakers for the monthly meetings. The president will be empowered to sign checks in the absence of the treasurer.

The Workshop Coordinator is responsible for researching, planning & coordinating club workshops.

The Webmaster is responsible for keeping the website up to date with the most current information, events and speakers. This position also includes setting up the mini-contest and members slide show each month.

This could also be a two person position, one for the website and one for the monthly meetings.

Field Trips

Cars and Coffee for a cause

Date: July 7th (Sunday)
Time: 9:00am - 11:00am
Place: The Woodlands Market Street

Take photos of antique, muscle, and various cars at Market Street. Members of the Woodlands Car Club (Facebook) bring their cars to the Woodlands Market Street the first Sunday of each month. The cost to you is free. The car owners make a donation to participate.

Meet at Starbucks (The coffee - not FREE :( ) in Market Street at 9:00am. The cars start arriving at 8:00am, so you can arrive early if you like. The buildings cast some serious shadows on bright days, so bring reflectors/diffusers if you have them. The streets in Market Street are closed during the exposition, so park in the Woodlands H.E.B parking lot and walk over. If you have questions please contact Shirley Cusack at [email protected]

Guided Nature Photography Tour

Place: Armand Bayou Nature Center
Date: July 13th
Time: 7:00am - 9:00am
Cost: $8.00 per person

Spots are still available. Please call the Armand Bayou Nature Center at 281-474-2551 to make your reservation. For those that signed up and paid at the June meeting, your reservations have been made.

We will meet at the Armand Bayou Nature Center at 6:30am. The guides are volunteers who have worked in and around the Bayou Nature Center for many years. During the walk the guides will identify Flora and Fauna. Be on the lookout for Deer, Birds, Reptiles, Insects, Small Mammals, and perhaps even a rare bobcat or coyote.

Working Ranch

Place: Forever Faithful Ranch
Date: August 17th

Cost: No entrance fee

Forever Faithful is a working ranch and we've been given free rein (Pun intended) to walk about freely and photograph the daily activities that are involved in living on a ranch. There are even a few old tractors and a tack barn and stables to photograph! We will go over the rules of the ranch before the field trip. There is a 15 person limit so sign up early.

The WPC Board is looking for members that have contacts in the following areas.

Junk Yards

Unique Collections

Ranches with Livestock and / or barns

We are also looking for good ideas for future field trips, workshops and volunteers to lead field trips.

The Lightroom workshop has been postponed and will be rescheduled for this fall.

Mini Contest

Submit your images (up to 2) to Blake by Friday, July 5th to participate in our monthly mini-contest! Please size images to 1024 pixels on the longest side!

Remember there is a $20 cash prize for the winner of the mini contest! So get those pictures sent in!

New Eligibility Rule starting for the 2013 contest

To enter the Fall contest, previous members must renew their membership no later than the July meeting and new members must join the club no later than the September meeting. The annual fees are $15/students, $25/individual, or $35/family.

The categories for the fall photo contest are as follows:

  1. Black & White: Urban Landscape

  2. People: Up close

  3. Nature: Spring

  4. Technique: Panning

  5. Wildcard: Photos from 2013 workshops and field trips

  6. New Members: The color Blue

  7. Open

All members may submit two photos per category with the exception of the New Member category which is only open to members who joined during 2012 and 2013. All pictures must be mounted, matted and framed (maximum frame outside total dimension 17x21 inches), in each category. There will also be a "Best of Show" and "Members Choice" award. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact a board member.
Minor adjustments such as contrast/brightness, removing dust and scratches, burning/dodging, and cropping are allowed. all other images alterations must be entered in the "Open category" or any category where a special technique is required.

Members Slide Show

Have you been someplace interesting or just gotten some great shots? Each month a portion of the meeting will be devoted to seeing and talking about the creative experiences of our membership. Please share your shots with members by participating in members slide show. Submit your photos (limit 4) to Blake by the Friday prior to the monthly meetings.
