JJ Shepherd, The Five Photoshop Steps every photographer should know before printing

JJ Shepherd, Restoration Artist and Digital Imaging Artist

JJ has been working with Adobe Photoshop for over ten years and has done everything from retouching portraits and composite design for local photography studios to complete restoration of heavily damaged photos. He is an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) and also gives one-on-one instruction in the program. While pursuing his bachelor's degree, he restored images for the Visual Resource Center at Rice University. After graduation, he became the retouch artist at a high end studio south of Houston, and he currently works as the restoration artist and printer at a local fine art printing house. He has come up with five tips to help every photographer prepare their images for the printing process.

These classes are for those of us with a great passion for photography but are just learning, shoot predominantly on Automatic and want to learn more. This course is designed for entry level photographers and also serves as a good review for the more advanced photographer. Film and Digital photographers are welcomed! This class assumes that the participant has a camera, a basic familiarity with their manual and a passion for photography! You will learn:

A. Beginning Photography: Automatic

Getting started

How to hold the camera and learn how to physically change your view.

Seeing Photographs and using both eyes when shooting

B. Introduction to technique

Learn how to focus properly

Learn your camera settings

C. Get practical experiences

Photographing people

Photographing Places

Get introduced to the advance settings

Your class will start with instruction from 10am - 12pm. We will spend the next 2 hours, 12pm - 2pm, eating lunch (provided) and practicing what we have learned. We will then return to the library for additional instruction from 2pm - 4pm. A minimum of 5 participants is required with a maximum of 15 for this class. The Critical Eye

Date: March 30th
Time: 4:00pm
Place: Montgomery County Community Center 2235 Lake Robbins Drive Room #102

Our first meeting of the Critical Eye is scheduled for Saturday March 30th, 4pm at the Woodlands Community Center. We will be focusing on the Feldman Critique. There is nothing you need to bring, unless you need to take notes.
When you send me an image at [email protected] it should have your file name as lastname_keywordofyourchoice_datepicture was taken as mmddyyyy.jpg (date can be approximate of course).-So here is an example,closson_portrait_02262013.jpg.
I will keep a spreadsheet of images that we've looked at, and the images will be renamed for the slide show.

A couple of things to keep in mind;
1. We are learning the methods of critique so this means we can spend two hours on one image and only 10 minutes on another. As long as we are learning we have no time constraints.
2. Subject is not critiqued. Context can be critiqued, or targeted audience. This an important skill to learn,as any photograph can be critiqued, even if we don't personally care for the subject matter.
3. Please only send me one image. This will be tough and future Critical Eye's will cover Hard Editing.

See you Saturday March 30.
