Our Meeting This Month
Fall Photo Contest

The Fall Contest is here! Please drop off your submissions on Saturday, October 6th from 9:30-11:30 AM at the front meeting room of the South Regional Library. Judging will take place at our Monday meeting on October 8th from 6:30 - 9:00 PM. Entries must be picked up by Saturday, November 10th between 9:00 - 11:00 AM.

All members may submit two photos per category with the exception of the New Member category which is only open for members who joined during 2011 and 2012. All pictures must be mounted, matted and framed (maximum frame outside total dimension 17 x 21), and wired to hang on a hook. First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention will be awarded in each category. There will also be a “Best of Show” and “Members Choice” award. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact a board member. The categories are as follows:

  1. B & W - Music
  2. Nature - Texture
  3. Technique - Night Photography
  4. People - Emotions
  5. Wild Card - 2012 Workshops and Field Trips
  6. New Member - The Woodlands, TX
  7. Open

Minor adjustments such as contrast/brightness, removing dust and scratches, burning/dodging and cropping are allowed. All other image alterations must be entered in the “Open” category or any category where a special technique is required. For the 2012 contest, the technique category (Night Photography) is open to digital manipulations.

2013 Board Member Positions

The following positions are opening up effective January 2013. Duties of the board consist of attending monthly club meetings and board meetings (the last Wednesday of each month), as well as the specific duties outlined below.

  1. The President will preside over meetings and is responsible for generally keeping the momentum going in a positive direction. This position takes the lead with regards to seeking out and scheduling speakers for the monthly meetings. The President will be empowered to sign checks in the absence of the Treasurer.

  2. The Vice President will preside over meetings whe the President is not able to attend and will assist the other board members with meetings and/or special events. The Vice President will also provide input on the newsletter.

  3. The Webmaster is responsible for keeping the website up to date with the most current information, events and speakers. Some HTML knowledge is suggested.

  4. The Newsletter Coordinator is responsible for sending out the monthly newsletter and general announcements. No layout or design work is necessary. The information is typed into an online template.

  5. The Workshop Coordinator is responsible for researching, planning & coordinating club workshops.

  6. The Historian is responsible for maintaining records of club speakers, judges and activities.

Field Trips

"Wild & Crazy" Night Photography with Kathy Adams Clark

Date: Tuesday, October 23rd
Location: Meet in front of the Community Center
Time: 6:30 PM
Cost: $20

Bring: Tripod, camera, flash, wide angle lens, extra batteries, flashlight, dark clothing. Put everything in a small bag and travel light. Crazy lights are a great way to learn simple layer processing. Instructions will be provided.

A tripod is required.

There is a 5 member minimum and a 20 member maximum for this field trip.

Houston Zoo

Date: Saturday, November 17th
Location: 6200 Hermann Park Dr. Houston, TX 77030
Time: 10:00 AM
Cost: $13 admission fee

Meet fellow members at the main entrance of the zoo at 10:00 AM and photograph to your heart's content! Look at the schedule of Keeper Talks ahead of time to find out when you might get a closer look at the animals (there are even Android and iPhone apps that include a daily schedule, map, and information about the animals).

Members Slide Show

Have you been someplace interesting or just gotten some great shots? Each month a portion of the meeting will be devoted to seeing and talking about the creative experiences of our membership. Please share your shots with members by participating in members slide show. Submit your photos (limit 5) to Blake by the Friday prior to the monthly meetings.
